Our Ukrainian Orthodox church, our Ukrainian culture and traditions were started as a result of passionate beliefs held by the pioneer members of this Cathedral. Starting almost from nothing but their own convictions, ideology and persistence, the pioneers of our parish helped set the principles that continue to guide our parish to this day. One such family was Katerina (102 years old, deceased July 2005) and Philip (73 yrs. old deceased February 1967) Koshlay. With the passing of Katerina, the Koshlays were members for 79 years, the exact anniversary being celebrated by our Parish this year. They were engaged in all areas of activity in the early life of our Parish. Mr. Koshlay helped organize the first Ukrainian School, loved singing and was an accomplished actor, together with his wife, Katerina. He was the 8th president of the Executive Council, a member of the Building Committee in l959. Mrs. Koshlay was a charter member of the Ukrainian Women's Assoc. of Canada, "Daughters of Ukraine". They both acted in plays staged by "Zaporozka Sich" They set a high standard of service to the community which we can all emulate. May their memory be eternal. |
