A Visitor's Question:
Any church without a bell and bell tower does not fit the definition of a Ukrainian Orthodox Church. In all my reading about the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople nowhere was there any mention made of bells. On another Web Site mention was made of church bells as a Western innovation  adopted by the Eastern Churches. Your comments on this topic would be greatly appreciated. see answer>>>

I am Dead
We are shocked and hurt when someone commits suicide. This is so when it was someone we admired. It is especially so when it is someone near to us, perhaps a member of the family. Usually suicides leave notes. They will often try to console the survivors. They say: "Don’t blame yourself for this", and say that they simply could not cope with life the way it was for them. more>>>

Weeping Icons of the Mother of God: The Power of Tearful Love
Today is the Feast of a special miraculous icon of the Mother of God of "Kaplunivka."  It belongs to that category of icon known as "weeping" since eye-witnesses saw it emit tears of aromatic oil from around the eyes of the Virgin depicted on it.  As any good child would wonder about their mother, so do we about our Spiritual Mother, and we ask, "Why is She crying?" more >>>

The Spirituality of the Jesus Prayer: A beginner's course absolutely free of charge . . .
Yes, it is true.  The riches of Eastern Christian spirituality are for sale across North America, including teachings about the Prayer of Jesus.  One such "spiritual centre" is offering a course in the "Way of the Pilgrim" and various "methods" of practicing the devotion it focuses on for a tidy sum of money, taxes included - and, please, no refunds. Well, with the economic and other problems that have suddenly hit us, we would like to offer a similar course, free of charge . . . more>>>

Of American flags and pictures of terrorists: Icons from unlikely sources
Our television screens are now not only filled with the ongoing events as they unfold in the U.S. and around the world since the tragedy of September 11th, but also with pictures of secular icons that communicate powerful symbolic messages that reflect strong human emotions and beliefs.  What is ironic is that the cultural heritages of the U.S. and Islam have historically negated the value of iconic representations.  Perhaps what we are seeing is an expression of something that is deeply rooted in human nature which no system or ideology may suppress.more>>>

St Athanasius of Brest:  A Martyr for True Church Unity
September 18 is the Feast of an Orthodox Saint who was killed by Catholics in the seventeenth century in defense of his Church.  Traditionally, the cult of St Athanasius Filipovich, Ihumen of Brest was aimed against the "Unia."  But does this mean that St Athanasius was against the reunion of the Churches?  Or was he simply against a certain formula of reunion that contemporary theologians, East and West, also say was and is unacceptable? more>>>

The Brave New World: Religion, History and Terrorists
The shock the West experienced on 11 September 2001 continues to exercise a hold over its mind and heart.  The grief of relatives searching for missing persons, the prayers and candles of people in the streets reaching out to the God of a thousand afterthoughts and the anger of millions all fill the screens of our television sets, day and night. more>>>>

Mass terror grips America: A snap-shot of Armageddon
The realization of a country's worst nightmare continues to unfold as New Yorkers and other Americans struggle with the physical and emotional destruction that this week's act of unspeakable terror has inflicted on the world's most powerful nation.  People world-wide are in a state of depression and concern for the victims, living and dead.  The big question gnawing at the hearts of all involved has to do with trying to make sense of it all.  Can religion help here? more>>>

The Lion Led by the Lamb
This Tuesday, September 11, we shall be celebrating a Feast that requires a fast. We shall be commemorating the Beheading of the Holy Prophet, Forerunner and Baptizer John. That is the glorious title that the Church has given him in recognition of the special place he has in the assembly of Saints.>>>more

The 950th Anniversary of the Kyiv Caves Lavra: Everyone invited but the Ukrainians
The recent Orthodox Church celebrations for this milestone anniversary of one of the world's greatest and holiest shrines at Kyiv was made notable by the absence of any representative from the Ukrainian Orthodox NOT in communion with Moscow.  Instead, the much-maligned Kyivan Patriarchate was obliged to undergo the humiliation of holding services elsewhere.  The President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma contented himself with a soap-box style speech shaking his finger at the Ukrainian Churches for failing to be united.  Was there more to this than meets the eye? >>>more
