SECURITY AMONG THE SHEEP
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem whose memory is celebrated the day after that of Saint Patrick of Ireland (March 18 and 17 respectively – that would be March 31 and 30 on the current Gregorian Calendar since the Julian Calendar which is used by our Ukrainian Orthodox Church is 13 days behind astronomically), exhorted his students in the Faith of Jesus: "Make your fold with the sheep; flee from the wolves”. more

St. Paraskevi
I was named for my grandmother, Paraska who came to the U.S. early 1900's from Ukraine. In researching her name, I believe she was probably named for St. Paraskevi but I don't see her name on the list of saints. Could you tell me something about her. answer

WHY ARE WE HERE?
Once again we stand upon the threshold of Great Lent. It is not necessarily a comfortable place to be. For we have gotten used to being lax in our living out of the gift and call we received at Baptism: to be Jesus to the world around us. And now Lent has come by again to trouble us – to challenge us, to recall our mission. Shall we try? Perhaps we can begin by looking at who Jesus was when He walked among us. more

Two questions from visitors:

  • Why do eastern rite churches (Orthodox and Catholic) start the season of Lent on a Monday rather than Ash Wednesday as in the western rite churches? How did the difference in day come about? answer

  • I am a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Friends have asked if I would like to join the Lions Club. I currently sit on the Church executive. Is it allowed for members of the Orthodox church to belong to the Lions Club and still serve on Church executives? Also, what is the Orthodox Church view of swearing oaths on the bible? answer

Spiritual Treasury of the Great Fast: The Prayer of St Ephrem the Syrian
The time of the Great Fast (aka "Lent") is a time for self-renewal in accordance with the rules of the Church with respect to fasting and her great prayer traditions that help us enter into the spirit of repentance ever more deeply. One such pearl of great price is the short and oft-repeated prayer of St Ephrem. Let's have a look at it up close . . . more

Church Slavonic
When did the Ukrainian Orthodox church in Canada stop using "church slavonic" during the Divine Liturgy? Was "church slavonic" ever considered a working language such as English, Ukrainian, French, etc or was it used solely as a liturgical holy language such as Latin in the Roman Catholic Church? see answer

  • My cousin just converted to Orthodoxy. She was raised Roman Catholic. She was confirmed as a child, but was "re-confirmed", or chrismated again as an Orthodox Christian. A visitor's commentary
You claim that "This site is an independent site which is not affiliated with any particular Church jurisdiction. Its purpose is to act in a supportive role for the mission and witness of Ukrainian Orthodoxy, in Ukraine and the Diaspora."
However, I think it is impossible to represent and support the mission of Ukrainian Orthodoxy without being connected or linked to any church. Any mission is a project of some people and not abstract.
Serious people would not trust too much to an anonymous opinion.
The second remark is the dominion of English. If you want to promote the witness of Ukrainian mission the question is whom you are going to witness? Definitely not to Ukrainian people.
I would like to see more texts in Ukrainian language (or at least in Russian) on your site.

A visitor's question
I have an important question. My best friends are a married couple.  The man is a Catholic and the woman is of Jewish decent. I truly love her and would be honored if she was the godparent to my child. Is this possible?  She believes in God.   Please let me know. See answer
