Saint Markian

Question:

My middle name is Markian. I understand that there was a Saint Markian, but I cannot find much information beyond that. Please tell me about him. I wonder why there are no churches named in his honor. Thank you.

There are a number of St Markians in the calendar and here are the lives of two of them.

St Markian the Senator had a son, John, who died and was brought back to life through the prayers of St Abundius. After witnessing this miracle, Markian converted to Christianity and he, his son and St Abundius, along with one St. Abundantius, were martyred at Rome around AD304. Their collective feast is September 16.

The Holy Martyr Markian, commemorated on July 13, was a native of Lyceian Iconium. He was a great preacher-missionary and converted many. Arrested and tortured, Markian was sent to Cappadocia in Asia Minor to the Roman governor Perennias. Markian refused the governor's promises and offers to reject Christ, and told the governor flatly that he was an idol-worshipper. After more torture, Markian was beheaded around AD258.

You may take your pick - or else celebrate them both!
