Infant Baptism

Question:

Can you please tell me what the Orthodox official view on Infant Baptism is. What are their beliefs about Infant Baptism. Do they believe in it? Do they baptise infants?

Answer:

Very Rev. Ihor Kutash kutash@unicorne.org

The Orthodox Church regularly baptizes infants.  We believe that this Holy Mystery which incorporate the person into the Body of Christ and makes His treasures of grace available to them is not reserved only for those who can make an informed, rational choice.  Jesus said: "You did not choose me - I chose you."  Being born into a family which belongs to Jesus is in a very significant way also His choosing.  We do not baptize simply because we want to save the person from hell.  Unbaptized infants - there are very many in the world, should they die might well go to heaven.  It is up to God to decide.  Our approach to this matter is not a legalistic, minimalistic one.  We baptize because we love our children and we love the Lord Who has given us this dignity, gift and responsibility.
