St. Lucian of Kyiv

Question:

Can you provide any sort of information on the life of my name/patron saint, St. Lucian, Hieromartyr and Presbyter of the Kiev Caves?

I saw an icon of him at www.oca.org , and read that he went to be with the Lord in 1243, but aside from that I know almost nothing about him. I am having a difficult time finding any information.

Answer:

Dr. Alexander Roman alex@unicorne.org

The icon that is on that site is NOT that of St Lucian of Kyiv but of St Lucian of Antioch, the "Sacred Martyr."

There are many Saints of the Kyiv Caves about which we know very little in terms of their biographies. In many cases, we only know their name and title (that is, whether they were a martyr etc.), and the date of their repose which is their feast-day.

Many records were lost as a result of the plundering of Kyiv by the Mongols and by others. In addition, earthquakes often resulted in wholesale avalanches of earth that covered the shrines of Kyivan Caves Saints.

Many of these have been unearthed, thanks to the efforts of modern archaeologists and the names of these long-forgotten Saints have been reinstated in the Calendar.

St Lucian was a Priest-Monk of the Kiyvan Caves Lavra who was martyred by Mongols in the 13th century.

We also know that he was a Miracle-worker which is why he was buried among the Fathers of the Kyivan Caves and is also honoured on collectively with them all on the Second Sunday of Lent and on the Second Sunday after Pentecost.
