St. Onufrius |

|
Question: I am seeking information on St. Onufrius. Who was he? Why was he popular among Ukrainian folk (as the name was a common given name and apparently echoes in my surname. Can you point me in the direction of this information? |

| Answer: St Onuphrius the Great lived for 70 years as a hermit in the desert near Thebais in Upper egypt. He lived on the fruits of a date palm-tree that grew near his cell and he was clothed only in an apron of leaves and his own long hair. He died in AD 400 and was buried by St Paphnutius who had come to him to learn if the hermit's life was for him. A hole in the mountain, where St Onuphrius was buried, immediately disappeared. St Onuphrius is a patron saint of weavers. The Coptic life of him depicts two lions burying him after his repose. His western name is Humphrey and there is a legend that he revealed that he would grant a favour to anyone who would light a candle for his mother. His cult was popular in the Middle Ages throughout the West. It was also popular in Ukraine and his icon is to be found in many Churches, including St Sophia in Kyiv. There is also a Church in Lviv in his honour. There is an Akathist service to him which, to the best of my knowledge, is only to be found in Church Slavonic. If you like, I could send you a photocopy. Dr. Alexander Roman alex@unicorne.org |
