Saint Gorazd II

Question:

I am looking for information in English about Saint Gorazd II. Have you any?

Even a small icon card would be appreciated.

Answer:

St Gorazd is the former Orthodox Bishop of Prague who was martyred by the Nazis during World War II.

A Serbian, Gorazd looked after the spiritual needs of Orthodox Czechs, Slovaks, Russians, Ukrainians, Serbians and others in Czechslovakia when the war broke out and the Nazis took over the country.

The SS governor of in Prague was a cruel man and the Czech underground organized an assassination attempt on him.

After studying the route he took to "work" each morning, they waited for his car to turn a particular corner before a group of Czech patriots came rushing out, hurling bombs.

The governor was badly wounded but wasn't killed. He died two weeks later however while his assassins fled.

The Czechs who participated in this act asked Bishop Gorazd for permission to hide in the undercroft of his Cathedral. Gorazd gave them his permission.

To smoke them out, the Nazis began a campaign of massive terror throughout the city, shooting many people each day and then announcing their names slowly over the radio each evening.

Finally, the Czechs hiding in the Cathedral met their end as the Nazis surrounded it and killed them in the ensuing gun battle.

Bishop Gorazd was arrested and tried for treason against the Third Reich. He offered no defense of his actions and was executed by the Nazis.

St Gorazd's Cathedral still stands today and Orthodox peoples of different cultural backgrounds, including Czechs and Slovaks, continue to be served by the priests there.

You could write to the Metropolitan of Prague who will send you icon cards of St Gorazd. I would send you one myself, but I am all out!
